Inspired by the Japanese Ukiyo-E woodblock prints of the Floating World, Manila Ukiyo-E is an artwork series created by Filipino artist Marius Black. In these works, he portrays both the glory and misery of the daily urban life of Filipinos living in Manila.

He captures every day scenes with his digital camera of what he sees as he walks the streets and depicts them in his paintings. They are a reflection of how he sees his fellow Filipinos in his own eyes.

UNNOTICED BEAUTY is Marius' way to show us the beauty he sees in the seemingly ugly. He gives meaning in the mundane, he enlightens us that beauty can be found almost anywhere, as long as we're willing to open our eyes and see.

He wants people look acknowledge our hardworking and fellow Filipinos, not to take pity on them but to be inspired by them. That even though most Pinoys are going through hardships and mishaps in their lives, they still live it, not giving up their right to exist and still enjoy life here in the Philippines.

Through these artworks, Marius wants us to achieve an appreciation of beauty we often fail to see, for us to take another look and appreciate the unnoticed beauty of Manila.

Marius Black is an independent comic book artist and painter along with her wife Guada in their tandem art group Kuro Saku.
